Learn to Swim

OUR PROGRAMS & LEVELS

 

Our learn to swim lesson plans are designed around well balanced progressions with

water safety and survival emphasised in early levels with formal stroking introduced in the higher levels. 

 

Lesson duration: 30 minutes

5:1 student/teacher ratio in lower levels

8:1 student/teacher ratio in higher levels (Mini Monsoons/Cyclones)

 

SKILLS TO BE ACHIEVED IN EACH LEVEL ARE LISTED BELOW:

 

LEVEL 4: FLOATS & TORPS:

Submerge with assistance if required; crawl along ledge; kick and paddle on a noodle independently;

turn around independently; back float and flip, flip and return to ledge assisted;

get onto a flotation aid; seated safe water entry, monkey, monkey and exit independently.

Recover an object from chest deep water; star float independently; torpedo independently for 2 meters; yoyo's independently; back float with a flotation aid independently; paddle two meters to a flotation aid and

return to the pool edge; paddle arms for two meters and recover for a breathe with assistance.

 

LEVEL 5: START ARMS:

Superhero kick on a board with sound technique; flip,flip swim from front to back with assisted sculling on back for a minimum of 6 seconds; begin lateral side breathing; kick soundly on the back for 6 meters using a flotation aid; Surface dive and swim underwater and recover an object from chest deep water; flip,flip swim with scull on the back for 5 meters independently; execute freestyle arms and breathing to the left side with assistance; swim backstroke for 5 meters assisted on a board; execute freestyle arms and breathing to the right side for 5 meters independently.

 

LEVEL 6: ARMS & BREATHING:

 Perform a reach rescue with the use of a flotation aid; swim backstroke for 5 meters; swim bilateral freestyle for 10 meters independently; Swim 5 meters of survival backstroke kick ; scull, float or tread water for 30 seconds.

 

LEVEL 7: MINI MONSOON HALF LAP: 8:1 student teacher ratio

 Recognise an emergency and call for help; perform a forwards somersault from the freestyle swimming position; swim backstroke for a minimum of 10 meters; swim bilateral freestyle for a minimum distance of 15 meters; swim survival backstroke for a minimum of 10 meters: swim breaststroke kick for 10 meters ; scull, float or tread water for 1 minutes waving intermittently for help.

LEVEL 8: MINI MONSOONS FULL LAP: 8:1 student teacher ratio - 45 minute class

The learn to swim level where swimmers will develop skills learnt in previous lessons over a full lap distance. Freestyle and backstroke skills are honed and basic breaststroke and turning skills introduced.  

LEVEL 9: Cyclones: 8:1 student teacher ratio - 45 minute class

A final learn to swim level where swimmers will develop skills learnt in previous lessons over a full lap distance. Further development of swimming and lifesaving skills building towards achieving Level 6 & 7 of Swim and Survive. Children will be prepared to enter our squad levels.
